Boot Camps
There are several types of teenage boot camps. There are short term
and long term boot camps, there are state funded jail boot camps,
prison boot camps, and privately owned boot camps. There are boot
camps that will take teens who don't want to be there and boot camps
that will only take willing participants. There are even weekend long
boot camps. We believe that most teens will generally do better in
a long term setting. If the teen is young and just beginning down
a negative path sometimes a weekend wake-up call will help. The majority
of the calls we take however, will need a longer stay, usually about
1 year. In most cases parent's have tried everything before they decide
to seek outside help.
Free Boot Camps
Most of the so called free boot camps are sponsored
by the state. These camps are also known as prison boot camps, or
jail boot camps. For a teen that needs to be redirected this would
not be the most ideal situation. The drawbacks of prison, or jail
boot camps are obvious. The first consideration is the fact that
they are close to home. Any new friends or fellow boot campers will
be easily sought out when the teen leaves the boot camp. If your
child has just started to head in a negative direction the last
thing you want to do is "hook him or her up" with someone
who may actually make the situation worse. The second consideration
is the fact that in many cases the population of this type of camp
is made up of court ordered participants. If your teen has not yet
been in the Juvenile system you would not want to place him or her
in with those have most likely been "in the system" for
quite some time. Taking the above into consideration the cost of
a free boot camp really may not be the best value or the best benefit
for your child.
There are a couple of options you can try if you don't have the ability to borrow for a program for your teen. One option is Tough Love they have support groups scattered across the country, and for a nominal amount you can obtain their parenting manual, and make a connection with a local group. To find the closest Tough Love location call 1-800-333-1069. While this option does not remove the child from the home it will help you learn what your rights as a parent are. It will also help you learn what is allowed by law to help you learn to discipline your child.
