Military School Specifics
What are the qualifications of a traditional
Military School?
Along with letters of recommendation from the potential cadet's
previous schooling many military schools will ask for more. Most
of the schools will require the potential cadet to be drug free
and may even require a drug test upon admission. A physical will
usually accompany a student looking for a military school placement.
The student must also be in relatively good shape and able to keep
up with other cadets during physical training exercises. During
the admission many military schools will also be evaluating the
potential cadet's attitude. It is important that the student have
a good attitude and a strong desire to be there. One military school
we spoke to said they would work with a boy that is somewhat resistant
and even allow him to make a mistake but if he repeated the same
mistake twice he would be asked to leave. This is an open door for
a boy that is looking for a way out and will do what ever it takes
to get kicked out of a military school.
What is the education like in a traditional Military
School?
Academics are the main focus in a traditional military
school. More is expected of a student in a military school. They
are given a heavy work load and the courses are more college prep
than a basic education they would receive in a public school district.
Many of the military schools we spoke to require the student to
bring letters of recommendation from their schools at home when
they came for their admission interview. The interview is another
factor that limits this type of placement and makes it difficult
to get a defiant student admitted. If you have a troubled teen
that refuses to go to any type of school you will have a difficult
time getting passed the preliminary interview that is part of
a military school admission.
What are the prices of a traditional Military
School?
Military schools range in price depending on what they have
to offer. Military schools begin around $1,200 per month
and increase from there. This price is less than the price
for defiant teen help. The students are given more freedom
to do what they want and are not watched as closely as they
are in a boot camp or boarding school for a defiant child.
This allows them to hold the price down. The cadets have
free time, are able to go into local towns, and go home
on weekends and holidays.
If my child is refused
by a traditional Military School but I am interested in
this type of structure what can I do?
We work with several boot camps and schools that are very
similar to a military school. The drill instructors are
former military and understand the type of structure and
discipline you are looking for. These schools are not affiliated
with the United States Military in any way but the parents
who have sent their children there will tell you that it
has accomplished what they were looking for.
